12 Days of Christian Self -Examination Day 2-Nuture the Body
Do you think of your body as sinful, unattractive, problematic?
Many people who claim to be or actually are Christians try to separate spiritual growth from the well being, energy, and vitality of their bodies.
This doesn't make you a better Christian. This type of thinking sets up roadblocks that make a peaceful life more difficult.
God created you with a body that allows you to exist in and interact with a three dimensional world. You will leave this world and this level of existence when your body no longer functions at a certain level.
Your body requires nurture (food, water, rest, movement, etc.) in order for you to live the life you've been given.
Are you throwing away your life by hating, damaging, and destroying your body?
Are you projecting negativity by wishing you were someone else?
Are you imagining goodness comes in a package that doesn't look like you?
Are you using sex and sexual fantasies to project your body into an experience that isn't your true experience?
Do you believe your body belongs to you and can be used by you for whatever purpose or expression you desire?
For many Christians, the epidemic of sexual sin, sexual dysfunction, and related issues come from the incorrect belief that the body is separate from the soul, mind, and spirit. These elements of your being are intertwined and cannot be separated.
God, the Holy Spirit, dwells in your body. Scripture teaches us our bodies will be raised at the last day and we will live forever in God's presence. At no place in Scripture can you find the idea that we will ever live as disembodied spirits, flying through the skies with wings or harps.
In chapter 15 of 1 Corinthians, Paul spends a good amount of time and ink explaining the resurrection of the believer. At no point does he say we will become like pictures from medieval art which featured images of angels with happy, baby-like faces.
Paul writes we will have a spiritual body, not a natural body. Body is the key word.
Your body- whether is is tall, short, dark, pale, skinny, heavy, strong, weak, ill or well -is a gift.
If your body needs healing, seek Jesus the Healer and do whatever He asks of you.
If you are struggling with loving the physical self you see in the mirror, this means God is calling you to cancel some old thinking and replace that old thinking with God's concept of you. This may involve reducing or eliminating your consumption of popular media messages about beauty or attractiveness.
Please do not ask God to build your self esteem and confidence while you consume media messages that tell you the opposite of what God says about you and wants you to know about yourself.
You are God's beloved, placed in a body that can be nurtured, healed, strengthened, and made for and ready for for any task God calls you to.
When you see yourself as God sees you (have you asked for God's view?), you will find it easier to create habits and patterns that affirm and sustain you as a beloved creature who reflects the glory, light, and goodness of God the creator.
You will see a reflection of God within your self and will nurture the being and body that holds the presence of God.
